Her casually replying she'd just send it off to her grandpa if it became ugly was based on her not having any real feelings for her pet. So I believe that after she lives with the kitten, and grows up with it, those affections will naturally emerge afterwards, making her no longer able to easily or casually say such words. Kids, ah... they're just as naïve as they are cute.
