“Good thing I haven’t thrown these out.” Ji Yu smiled in satisfaction. After getting dressed, he placed the three pups into the rabbit pen and then locked the main gate when he left.
Fortunately, for the next few days after the heavy rains, the heavens blessed everyone with bright and shining skies. Ji Yu was done with his roof repairs at that time, so even though there were some light showers after he was done, he spent that time happily cuddled up with his pups inside the house.

“Oi, Ji Yu! The village chief wants you to come to his house.”
When the weather cleared up once more, Ji Yu journeyed into the forest to gather more mushrooms. While drying them out back, he heard a knock at his gate.

The one knocking cared little about making sure whether Ji Yu heard him or not, because after knocking and saying what he must, he fled. Clearly afraid that something ominous would latch on to him if he loitered.

It’s one thing if we’re talking about marrying off our children, especially a daughter, but getting a child to bring in a spouse is another matter entirely. “How long has it been since he washed his clothes?!”

As farmers, taking a spouse into one’s family was the type of marriage they practised as much as possible. No matter the sex, that family gains another labourer. But if a man gets married off, he becomes a labourer for another household. Who would be willing to bear such a life? But, sometimes, people are left with little choice.

“Alright. Since everyone is here, let's get this meeting on the way.It was actually true? Ji Yu pondered at the chief’s words.

“Alright. Since everyone is here, let's get this meeting on the way.” The village chief spoke. “We just received a marriage order from the imperial court. It requires a census of all the young men and women who are currently engaged in common-law marriages. It states all persons of the legal age below nineteen to be wed in a year. Lastly, it also informs us that those over the age of nineteen have only a month to find a marriage partner; otherwise, they will be sent to the county prison.” The village chief looked at the crowd gravely as he spoke these final words.

“Oi, Ji Yu! The village chief wants you to come to his house.”“But, Chief, such an order is easy to say, but wouldn’t it be difficult to put into practice?”

“Oi, Ji Yu! The village chief wants you to come to his house.”

“I understand—I am more than aware of how poor we are here in Liu Village, but there is no way for us to change these circumstances in the short term. So for any family who has a son of age unable to bring a partner into their house, we will have them marry into another’s family.
“Village Chief.” Ji Yu walked over to the large crowd he saw gathered around a large tree in the clearing at the centre of the village. As he made his way through the crowd, the ones nearby covered their noses.

We can in no way allow them to be sent off to prison!” There was nothing but helplessness in the village chief’s voice as he suggested the only measure he could.

“Enough. That’s all there is, so you should all return and settle these matters as soon as you can. The government office is awaiting our report.” With a wave of his hand, the village brought an end to the gathering.Fortunately, for the next few days after the heavy rains, the heavens blessed everyone with bright and shining skies. As the villagers returned to their homes, they gathered in small groups to discuss their children’s affairs. Families who were never fond of each other were talking and laughing about the strengths and shortcomings of their prospective in-laws. But around Ji Yu, not a soul gathered. In fact, no one paid him any mind outside of his stench.

Put simply, the reason behind those elders’ words could be summed up by the word: poverty. If not for their poverty, would any parents with even a little affection for their child simply let them stay unwed until such an age?

When the weather cleared up once more, Ji Yu journeyed into the forest to gather more mushrooms. While drying them out back, he heard a knock at his gate.

“Oh, Ji Yu! You made it?”

“Oh, Ji Yu! You made it?”

Notes:

Note: When it comes to marriages, two separate words are used to describe the act of “taking a wife: 娶: qu3” and “marrying into a husband's family: 嫁: jia4.” Same-sex marriages are allowed here, so these gendered terms only specify who’s becoming part of whose household and nothing more. The same can be said about the terms husband and wife. "Husbands" are the ones taking a person into their family, and "wives" are the ones entering into another family.
