When Xiao Ning returned home, Shen Yunjie was still awake. Instead of being in bed, he sat at the table with the dim light of a candle illuminating his face. In those past few days, he seemed to have again lost weight, given how his robe that fit perfectly was now clearly loose.

As for Xiao Ning, he couldn’t tell whether it was embarrassment or anger that clouded his senses as he spat out whatever cruel words he could. “Yes, I went to Nanjiu Lane, a place where even a common whore has more skills than you. But what right do you have to question me, huh? All I did was keep you around for a few weeks, and you’re acting as if we’re husband and wife!”“Were you waiting for me?” After pushing open the door of the bedroom and walking in, Xiao Ning sat down on the edge of the bed.

“So what happened?” Did you and your wife have a fight?” Clinking his bowl of liquor to Xiao Ning’s, Old Zhou then took a sip.“What?” Xiao Ning tilted his head in confusion before grabbing the filled bowl and pouring it down his throat.

Shen Yunjie could only meekly watch that door slam shut, the force enough to extinguish the sole-lit candle. Like this, the last bit of light in that room was snuffed out, plunging the room into darkness.

Xiao Ning froze at his words. With his expression darkening, Xiao Ning simply commented in return, “Looks like you know quite a lot.”Turning away from the man, Xiao Ning made his way out, but the closer he got to the door, the more anxious he became as he neared his doorstep. The fear was so overwhelming he was practically sprinting back home. Pushing the bedroom door when he got there, he found the room was unusually quiet. Only his own ragged breaths could be heard in the pitch-black room.

“Why are you standing so far away?” Xiao Ning asked with a huff. “Come here.”But as he moved to leave, Xiao Ning grabbed him by the arm, pulling him into his embrace before he whispered, “No need.”
“Why are you standing so far away?” Xiao Ning asked with a huff. “Come here.”
With a kick, the door to Old Zhou’s clinic was kicked open, the clamour making the old man almost roll off his bed. Rubbing his sleepy face, the old man tried to wake himself up to see who on earth had come in.
Seeing him enter, Shen Yunjie walked over and crouched before him. Dipping a finger in the footbath he had prepared earlier, he commented, “It’s gotten cold. I’ll go heat some more.”

But Shen Yunjie showed no signs of moving, his stinging gaze falling to the floor as he unconsciously asked, “So did you really go to Nanjiu Lane, young master?”“He’s not my wife.” Xiao Ning scoffed. “He never wanted to marry me to begin with.”

“Do you think someone not wanting to marry you would let you roll around with you like that?” Old Zhou shook his head while pouring more wine. “So what’s your end goal, huh? Are you just planning to pop out a few more ‘shaobings’?”But as he moved to leave, Xiao Ning grabbed him by the arm, pulling him into his embrace before he whispered, “No need.”

While he was lost in his own internal conflict, the dizzy Shen Yunjie, feeling the warm liquid seeping from under him, weakly reached out. “Young master…” Grasping Xiao Ning’s sleeve, he groaned.

The second Shen Yunjie fell into Xiao Ning’s arms; the strong scent of alcohol mixed with the rich scent of perfume rushed into his nose, the stench enough to twist his stomach to the point of vomiting. But he forced the uncomfortable feeling back down and instead hesitantly asked, “You came back quite late, young master. So where did you go?”

“Shen Yunjie?” Xiao Ning shook the sleeping man’s arm. In an instant, the air was filled with the sweet, metallic scent of blood. Rushing to find and light a candle, the bright light illuminated Shen Yunjie’s colourless face, alongside the brilliant crimson staining the bottom of his robe.

Old Zhou’s expression grew solemn as he hurried over to take Shen Yunjie’s pulse. After what seemed like ages, he turned to Xiao Ning and hesitantly announced, “He… um, he may not be able to keep the child in his stomach.”With his lips curling into a bitter smile, Shen Yunjie turned to leave, but before he could take a step out the door, Xiao Ning pulled him back and threw him on the bed with a thud. Shen Yunjie felt his mind blank momentarily, and when his senses returned, his entire body shook from pain.

.“Shen Yunjie, are you upset? Are you, of all people, upset right now?” Fury surged within Xiao Ning, so much so that he wished he could snap the thin wrists in his grasp. “You want to know where I went? You want to know what I do? Why? Who do you think you are?”

Not answering as he grabbed a stool, Xiao Ning sat down before slapping two jugs of wine on the table.
Shen Yunjie stopped any further questions right there, but he broke himself away from Xiao Ning’s hold and made his way to the door, where he stood silently.

For the second time that night, Xiao Ning kicked Old Zhou’s broken door open, this time with Shen Yunjie in his arms.
“Shen Yunjie, are you upset? Are you, of all people, upset right now?” Fury surged within Xiao Ning, so much so that he wished he could snap the thin wrists in his grasp. “You want to know where I went? You want to know what I do? Why? Who do you think you are?”

But Shen Yunjie could hardly focus on his words with the severity of his pain making it hard for him to breathe. His insides felt as though they were being stirred by something sharp—as if he was being shredded! It was so painful he couldn’t speak.

“Fine. I don’t understand either, so you two can just keep messing around with reckless abandon.” Old Zhou then rubbed his chin as he added with a sigh, “But everyone only gets a few decades of life. So whether it be regret or pain, it can all disappear in the blink of an eye.”

“Your hands are stained with the blood of my family, Shen Yunjie. For as long as I live, I can never forgive you.” But these words of his seemed to not be directed at the man before him as they echoed within his heart, as if they were an oath he had to make sure he would never forget. Right then, he felt as though he was truly being ridiculous. The one lying beneath him was already someone he had no fathomable way of being with, yet, time and time again, he was unable to sever their ties. It was as if he had truly lost his mind.
“So what happened?” Did you and your wife have a fight?” Clinking his bowl of liquor to Xiao Ning’s, Old Zhou then took a sip.
Xiao Ning still poured wine down his gullet. The liquor burnt as it rolled down his throat, but he still downed bowl after bowl until half the jug was gone. Clutching his face as he struggled to breathe, his first thought was to obviously get angry, but such feelings dissipated upon seeing the reddened eyes of Xiao Ning; the youth looked as though his entire world had fallen.

But Shen Yunjie showed no signs of moving, his stinging gaze falling to the floor as he unconsciously asked, “So did you really go to Nanjiu Lane, young master?”
“Is it really so hard for you to just use the door properly?” The old man scratched his messy head and went to bed.
But Shen Yunjie showed no signs of moving, his stinging gaze falling to the floor as he unconsciously asked, “So did you really go to Nanjiu Lane, young master?”
“Were you waiting for me?” After pushing open the door of the bedroom and walking in, Xiao Ning sat down on the edge of the bed.
Not answering as he grabbed a stool, Xiao Ning sat down before slapping two jugs of wine on the table.
“Were you waiting for me?” After pushing open the door of the bedroom and walking in, Xiao Ning sat down on the edge of the bed.
Xiao Ning’s mind went blank the second the words hit his ears; his swaying body only remained steady thanks to the older man grabbing him.“Fine, then.” Old Zhou didn’t stop his departure, only pointing to the door as he gave some parting words. “Just think it over carefully, alright? Now, get lost.”

“Can you be a bit lighter? It’s the middle of the night. Even if we won’t be sleeping, it doesn’t mean everyone else doesn't have to.” For a good while, Old Zhou looked around until he found two clean bowls. Placing them on the table, he then pulled open the wine’s seal.
.
But Xiao Ning shook off his hand without sparing him so much as a glance. Then, grabbing his tossed coat that was thrown on haphazardly, he pushed open the door and left.“Fine, then.” Old Zhou didn’t stop his departure, only pointing to the door as he gave some parting words. “Just think it over carefully, alright? But as he moved to leave, Xiao Ning grabbed him by the arm, pulling him into his embrace before he whispered, “No need.”“Fine. I don’t understand either, so you two can just keep messing around with reckless abandon.” Old Zhou then rubbed his chin as he added with a sigh, “But everyone only gets a few decades of life. So whether it be regret or pain, it can all disappear in the blink of an eye.”

As for Xiao Ning, he couldn’t tell whether it was embarrassment or anger that clouded his senses as he spat out whatever cruel words he could. “Yes, I went to Nanjiu Lane, a place where even a common whore has more skills than you. But what right do you have to question me, huh? All I did was keep you around for a few weeks, and you’re acting as if we’re husband and wife!”
Xiao Ning picked up the bowl of wine poured out for him, still remaining silent, before dumping all the liquor down his throat.

The old man had drunk himself in quite a stupor by then, to the point he hardly noticed the door slamming and had to have half a pot of herbal tea poured in his face by Xiao Ning to wake up. “So what happened?” Did you and your wife have a fight?” Clinking his bowl of liquor to Xiao Ning’s, Old Zhou then took a sip.

But he forced the uncomfortable feeling back down and instead hesitantly asked, “You came back quite late, young master. So where did you go?”

“Do you think someone not wanting to marry you would let you roll around with you like that?” Old Zhou shook his head while pouring more wine. “So what’s your end goal, huh? Are you just planning to pop out a few more ‘shaobings’?”

“Shen Yunjie?” Xiao Ning shook the sleeping man’s arm. In an instant, the air was filled with the sweet, metallic scent of blood. Xiao Ning still poured wine down his gullet. The liquor burnt as it rolled down his throat, but he still downed bowl after bowl until half the jug was gone. But for no reason at all, he shot up to his feet and turned to leave. It was so sudden, Lao Zhou grabbed him and asked, “Why did you stop?”

Turning away from the man, Xiao Ning made his way out, but the closer he got to the door, the more anxious he became as he neared his doorstep. When Xiao Ning returned home, Shen Yunjie was still awake. Instead of being in bed, he sat at the table with the dim light of a candle illuminating his face. In those past few days, he seemed to have again lost weight, given how his robe that fit perfectly was now clearly loose.
