"He's my dad too?" Li You's face was filled with shock as she stared at me.
"No..." Miss Li You, aren't you putting a bit too much thought into this? Marrying two husbands... You're quite the ambitious one, don't you think?
I nodded.
"So I can't marry to husbands then, can I?"
I stared her down, keeping my silence for a moment. After I thought carefully of the right words, then explained to her sincerely: "If I told you that you came from my belly, I guess you wouldn't believe it, huh? But you really did come out of my tummy, Youyou."
"I didn't get a chance to talk with him properly last time. Will I get the chance to meet him again some day?" After our chat was again about Xiao Huaisu, Li You asked.
I shook my head: "After they gave me a shot, I didn't feel a thing." However, after the anaesthesia wore off it had immediately hurt so much I wanted to die. But I'd never tell her such a thing, I have the image of a strict father to maintain, you know. Pulling down my shirt, I continued: "So... you don't have a mom, only two dads."
"Oh, is that so. Don't you think dad looks like an elder left behind?"
She then added: "But if you're my dad, and he's my dad, then who's my mom? Did my mom have two husbands? Can I have two husbands in the future too? Can girls actually marry two husbands after they grow up?"
Xiao Huaisu then spoke: "I never expected you would manage to raise such a sensible daughter like Li You with that careless character of yours." His expression was on filled with regret, while his tone contained hints of complexity.
But I couldn't take the risk, the present me was rather cowardly. From ever since I had Li You, my courage has been reduced even more.
When I heard the laughter from both that big one and that little one, a sad atmosphere gradually gathered around me, and I suddenly felt that living alone wouldn't be so bad in all seriousness.
"No..." Miss Li You, aren't you putting a bit too much thought into this? Marrying two husbands... You're quite the ambitious one, don't you think?
Hearing they can still meet, Li You smiled all satisfied like, before asking: "Is he really that weak that this would scare him? Okay then." Saying that, she closed her eyes. But just when I was getting ready to turn off the lights, with her eyes still closed, Li You added: "But even though he's my dad too, the one I love the most is you, dad. Goodnight."
I stared a her utterly dumbfounded. Didn't we agree I'd be talking about you having a second father? So how the heck did the conversation switch to being about you being able to have two husbands? Anyhow, fortunately, it was rather easy to shift a kid's attention. So it was time to pull the plug on this topic and change it right now!
"Of course you will. Didn't he gift you chocolates last time? So next time, how about we buy a gift to give to him? That way you can meet him again. But he doesn't know anything about the real relationship between you two, so to not scare him, let's not tell him for now, okay?"
Li You turned her gaze to my stomach, so I pulled up my shirt, showing her the scar on my tummy: "I got this giving birth to you."
"I think so too."
I stared her down, keeping my silence for a moment. After I thought carefully of the right words, then explained to her sincerely: "If I told you that you came from my belly, I guess you wouldn't believe it, huh? But you really did come out of my tummy, Youyou."

Li You turned her gaze to my stomach, so I pulled up my shirt, showing her the scar on my tummy: "I got this giving birth to you."
"Haha—" Xiao Huaisu's serene laugh, from afar and near, was incomparably unbridled.
Seeing those two having a nice chat, I turned and went to the kitchen to see if there was any water.
I also asked Xiao Huaisu afterwards, "How about you?"
"So this scar was because of me? Did it hurt?" Li You touched my belly then asked.
Covering Li You with her blanket, thought about how since Xiao Huaisu was still single, taking Li You to go see him shouldn't be a problem.
I shook my head: "After they gave me a shot, I didn't feel a thing." However, after the anaesthesia wore off it had immediately hurt so much I wanted to die. I was completely bought over with just that one sentence, so the next day I took Li You out shopping to pick out a gift. While we were at the shopping mall, Li You sat in the shopping cart, looking up at me as she asked: "Dad, what does he like?"
"You're sick, I'll take care of these." I asked Xiao Huaisu to keep her company to give them a chance to talk. That was so sweet of me, wasn't it?
This scene really made me feel as though Xiao Huaisu liked kids.
Goodnight."
"So I can't marry to husbands then, can I?"
While standing outside his door and ringing his doorbell, Li you looked up up at me with the potted flower cradled in her arm to ask: "Dad, is he at home?"
Witnessing that big one and little one obediently drinking their water before my eyes made a difficult to describe feeling of pride lingered in my chest. Grateful, I nodded at them both. After he had finished half of the glass, Xiao Huaisu asked me: "Li You said this flower is my gift. Why did you suddenly want to give me a present?"
"So this scar was because of me? Did it hurt?" Li You touched my belly then asked.
I've been telling you all this yet the only thing you feel bad about is not being able to get two husbands? I looked at Li You angrily, the hurt in my eyes peeking through as I explained to her with a straight face: "Our country practices monogamy, meaning everyone can only have one partner. Having two wives or two husbands is a crime. So you need to let this idea go." I did this while also telling her with my eyes: drop the idea, kid.
In the living room, as soon as I placed the dishes and chopsticks in the sink, I heard Li You say to Xiao Huaisu: "You left dad all alone in the kitchen? Don't you think he looks very lonely?"
I made a clear rice porridge afterwards, along with a few vegetable dishes as sides. There was no meat-based dishes though, but seeing neither of the two complain the meal was boring without it, and both of them eating it all up without any issue; as a cook, I felt my sense of accomplishment slowly blip higher.
"You'll give her a make up class?" I didn't know what he was thinking, but after saying this he let out a smile.
"It's alright," Li You replied. Normally, if she thought the meal wasn't tasty, she's say directly that it tasted bad. So her saying it was alright really meant it was in fact yummy.
Xiao Huaisu's gaze fell, a warm smile gracing his face as he turned to Li You, caressing her head as he said: "Thank you. The flower, I like it very much. But today's a weekday, so don't you need to be at school?"
Li You, seeming to be deep in thought, nodded then asked: "But Qing Lin said he had two moms. He said one was his mom and the other was his little mom. Didn't you just say people are monogamous and everybody can only have one partner? So why does Qing Lin's dad have to wives then? Why hasn't the police come to arrest him?" This Qing Lin kid was a classmate of hers.
I had no idea why, but this father-daughter pair always had the urge to put me down. However, for the sake of world peace, I switched the topic. Checking the time, I then asked him: "Have you eaten yet?"
While washing the dishes in the kitchen, my face turned blank. Is it really that good for me to be so considerate, so sensible as well as so selfless?

Your dad likes being alone."
I looked at Li You, then explained: "Didn't you give her chocolates last time? Courtesy demands reciprocity, you know. So this is her gift to you in return."
I also asked Xiao Huaisu afterwards, "How about you?"
Covering Li You with her blanket, thought about how since Xiao Huaisu was still single, taking Li You to go see him shouldn't be a problem.
Waving my hands, I said: "Don't order anything. You're sick but you still want to eat take-out? Do you have any ingredients in your fridge?" Seeing Xiao Huaisu nod, I got up, declaring: "I'll make us lunch then. Youyou, play with him for a while, okay? Anyway, since you're sick, you probably want to eat something light—" As I mumbled away, I scurried off to the kitchen in order to show off my few talents. Giving Xiao Huaisu no chance to speak, nor any chance to refuse.
"Um... let me think."
I shook my head: "After they gave me a shot, I didn't feel a thing." However, after the anaesthesia wore off it had immediately hurt so much I wanted to die. "I was planning to order some take-out right around the time you two arrived."
Goodnight."
When Xiao Huaisu looked at me, I could feel him using his eyes to tell me: You actually got your daughter to cut class.
When her words struck me, my eyes brimmed with tears as I looked at my little princess. Bending my head, I placed a kiss on her forehead, then saying to her very affectionately in return: "Goodnight."
Xiao Huaisu still helped me carry the bowls, following beside me, he asked: "It's just a fever, and it's even gone down now. Do I look that weak to you?"
Handing a cup of water to Xiao Huaisu, I instructed: "Drink more water, the faster you do it the better."
While standing outside his door and ringing his doorbell, Li you looked up up at me with the potted flower cradled in her arm to ask: "Dad, is he at home?"
It may be true my daughter has a bit of a poisonous tongue at times, but when she needs to be warm, she's very warm, isn't she? After ignoring my kiss, she wiped her face in disgust. Everything was pure perfection.
"It's just a mild fever, nothing more." Seeing Li You's flower, Xiao Huaisu then asked: "Did you buy this?"
"Of course you will. Didn't he gift you chocolates last time? So next time, how about we buy a gift to give to him? That way you can meet him again. But he doesn't know anything about the real relationship between you two, so to not scare him, let's not tell him for now, okay?"
"I heard he didn't have a class today, so he should be here. I even messaged him to ask if he'd be home and he said yes." Muttering to the door, I then added: "He couldn't have gone out in such a short span of time." How could I be so unlucky.
"You're sick, I'll take care of these." I asked Xiao Huaisu to keep her company to give them a chance to talk. That was so sweet of me, wasn't it?

Li You pointed at a lighter on one of the counters, "Would he like this?"

Li You pointed at a lighter on one of the counters, "Would he like this?"
Seeing those two having a nice chat, I turned and went to the kitchen to see if there was any water.
"I never saw him smoke, and giving a gift like this is—" Before I could finish speaking I saw the price tag next to that lighter, the sight of it making me gasp. One, two, three, four, five figures! My eyes grew wide as firmly shook my head while telling my daughter: "Giving him a gift like this, isn't it basically encouraging him to start smoking? Encouraging smoking is no different than encouraging someone's death." As in, it was so damn expensive, it could just about scare the life right out of me.
He sat up, planning to help me clear the dishes, giving his answer while we were picking them up: "Well, it looked appetising and tasted surprisingly good." Muttering to himself, he then remembered: "In the past, didn't you once burn down the kitchen trying to boil noodles?"
Wearing a guilty expression, I defended: "I'll make up for the missing class, don't worry."
"No..." Miss Li You, aren't you putting a bit too much thought into this? Marrying two husbands... You're quite the ambitious one, don't you think?
"Okay, we'll just look for something else," Li You shrugged.
Handing a cup of water to Xiao Huaisu, I instructed: "Drink more water, the faster you do it the better."
Your dad likes being alone."

Your dad likes being alone."
Covering Li You with her blanket, thought about how since Xiao Huaisu was still single, taking Li You to go see him shouldn't be a problem.
Later, using various methods to steer her in the right direction, Li You bought him a small potted flower, and I praised it wonderfully: "Wow, it smells so nice. It's enough to lift the spirits of those around it. Seeing this flower every day will definitely put a person in a good mood." Mainly because it saves a person money, that is.
"I think so too."
When I heard the laughter from both that big one and that little one, a sad atmosphere gradually gathered around me, and I suddenly felt that living alone wouldn't be so bad in all seriousness.

The next Monday, I had asked Li You's teacher for the day off, taking her with me on campus. First I took her with me to class, receiving many "you're little sister is so cute" from everyone we passed by. Then after checking if it as almost time, I took Li You to Xiao Huaisu's place.
"So I can't marry to husbands then, can I?"
Li You hummed in agreement. Just then, the door in front of us was opened from the inside. Xiao Huaisu was wearing his home clothes, along with a fever reducing patch stuck to his forehead. When he saw me, he raised his brow, then upon seeing Li You beside he was shocked, however a smile soon drew itself on his pale face as he asked her: "Youyou, don't you have school today?"
"No..." Miss Li You, aren't you putting a bit too much thought into this? Marrying two husbands... You're quite the ambitious one, don't you think?
It appeared that despite Xiao Huaisu's illness, he could still take very good care of himself, there was water heated beforehand. Later when I carried the water out to give them, the two had already moved their conversation to the sofa. Xiao Huaisu held a book about flowers while explaining it to Li You, and the flower Li You gifted him was placed on the coffee table.
"Thinking about those days is unpleasant..." Closing my eyes, I wiped away the image of the smoke filled air from my mind, "A person grows over time, you know? Plus, I even managed to raise such a mouthy little girlie." I looked over to Li You who was right in the middle of drinking some juice. Hearing me call her a girlie, made her shoot me a look before taking her cup of juice and leaving for the living room.

Li You's eyes lit up, with her then asking: "How did you know?"
A laugh escaped Xiao Huaisu's lips, as he then said to Li You meaningfully: "You dad has you though, so he's definitely very lucky."
"You're sick, I'll take care of these." I asked Xiao Huaisu to keep her company to give them a chance to talk. That was so sweet of me, wasn't it?

Seeing the fever patch attached to his head, Li You instead asked: "Are you sick?"
"Um... let me think."
Did he not go to school because he was ill? I immediately helped Xiao Huaisu back into his apartment. He looked at me, but didn't push me away, saying: "It's only a fever. I'm still not in a weak enough state to need someone supporting me. Anyhow, what are you doing here?"
"Of course you will. Didn't he gift you chocolates last time? So next time, how about we buy a gift to give to him? That way you can meet him again. But he doesn't know anything about the real relationship between you two, so to not scare him, let's not tell him for now, okay?"

"Did you take medicine?"
Even though the one who gave me supplemental lessons in the past was you, the content of kindergarten classes won't be an issue for me, alright? The fact is I still got into A-University. But um... I guess most of that was due to your contributions though.
"Did you take medicine?"
Li You didn't give it to him right away, instead asking: "Do you think it's pretty?" She seemed nervous, or maybe I was seeing things. It was my first time seeing this somewhat nervous little girl. Aw... her cuteness level is off the charts!
"It's alright," Li You replied. Normally, if she thought the meal wasn't tasty, she's say directly that it tasted bad. So her saying it was alright really meant it was in fact yummy.

When I got to the kitchen, I looked back at Li You. Sneaking a chance to look back at me when Xiao Huaisu wasn't paying attention, I sent her a wink, and she put her hand behind her back to sent me a thumbs up.
"Okay, we'll just look for something else," Li You shrugged.

Just then, Li You spoke up: "You don't need to worry, Uncle Xiao. My classes aren't that hard at all, so dad doesn't need to give me any extra lessons. I'll revise on my own when we get back home." When she was done speaking, she returned to admiring the flowers inside the book.
You two are having a nice chat, huh? An elder left behind? Do you think I can't hear you?
"Thinking about those days is unpleasant..." Closing my eyes, I wiped away the image of the smoke filled air from my mind, "A person grows over time, you know? Having only taken a few sips from the cup in her hands and not wanting to drink any more, Li You dawdled before saying bluntly: "Dad asked for a day off for me." Taking advantage of this opening to rest the cup on the coffee table then pick up the book about flowers on the sofa.

I then asked Li You: "Is it yummy?"
"So I can't marry to husbands then, can I?"
Li You's eyes lit up, with her then asking: "How did you know?"
"No..." Miss Li You, aren't you putting a bit too much thought into this? Marrying two husbands... You're quite the ambitious one, don't you think?
Wearing a guilty expression, I defended: "I'll make up for the missing class, don't worry."
I looked at Li You, then explained: "Didn't you give her chocolates last time? Courtesy demands reciprocity, you know. So this is her gift to you in return."
But I couldn't take the risk, the present me was rather cowardly. From ever since I had Li You, my courage has been reduced even more.
Xiao Huaisu's gaze fell, a warm smile gracing his face as he turned to Li You, caressing her head as he said: "Thank you. The flower, I like it very much. But today's a weekday, so don't you need to be at school?"
Having only taken a few sips from the cup in her hands and not wanting to drink any more, Li You dawdled before saying bluntly: "Dad asked for a day off for me." Taking advantage of this opening to rest the cup on the coffee table then pick up the book about flowers on the sofa.

This scene really made me feel as though Xiao Huaisu liked kids.
"Um... let me think."
When Xiao Huaisu looked at me, I could feel him using his eyes to tell me: You actually got your daughter to cut class.
When I got to the kitchen, I looked back at Li You. Sneaking a chance to look back at me when Xiao Huaisu wasn't paying attention, I sent her a wink, and she put her hand behind her back to sent me a thumbs up.
Wearing a guilty expression, I defended: "I'll make up for the missing class, don't worry."
Wearing a guilty expression, I defended: "I'll make up for the missing class, don't worry."
Goodnight."

"You'll give her a make up class?" I didn't know what he was thinking, but after saying this he let out a smile.

Xiao Huaisu then spoke: "I never expected you would manage to raise such a sensible daughter like Li You with that careless character of yours." His expression was on filled with regret, while his tone contained hints of complexity.
Even though the one who gave me supplemental lessons in the past was you, the content of kindergarten classes won't be an issue for me, alright? The fact is I still got into A-University. But um... I guess most of that was due to your contributions though.
I resisted the urge to roll my eyes, somewhat frustratedly asking: "I just wanted you to keep Youyou company for a while. She's all alone in the living room right now, don't you think that's cruel?"
"It's alright," Li You replied. Normally, if she thought the meal wasn't tasty, she's say directly that it tasted bad. So her saying it was alright really meant it was in fact yummy.
"I didn't get a chance to talk with him properly last time. Will I get the chance to meet him again some day?" After our chat was again about Xiao Huaisu, Li You asked.
"I was planning to order some take-out right around the time you two arrived."
She then added: "But if you're my dad, and he's my dad, then who's my mom? Did my mom have two husbands? Can I have two husbands in the future too? Can girls actually marry two husbands after they grow up?"

"Um... let me think."
I had no idea why, but this father-daughter pair always had the urge to put me down. However, for the sake of world peace, I switched the topic. Checking the time, I then asked him: "Have you eaten yet?"
When I heard the laughter from both that big one and that little one, a sad atmosphere gradually gathered around me, and I suddenly felt that living alone wouldn't be so bad in all seriousness.
"I was planning to order some take-out right around the time you two arrived."
When her words struck me, my eyes brimmed with tears as I looked at my little princess. Bending my head, I placed a kiss on her forehead, then saying to her very affectionately in return: "Goodnight."

"Okay, we'll just look for something else," Li You shrugged.
When I got to the kitchen, I looked back at Li You. Sneaking a chance to look back at me when Xiao Huaisu wasn't paying attention, I sent her a wink, and she put her hand behind her back to sent me a thumbs up.
A laugh escaped Xiao Huaisu's lips, as he then said to Li You meaningfully: "You dad has you though, so he's definitely very lucky."

"It's alright," Li You replied. Normally, if she thought the meal wasn't tasty, she's say directly that it tasted bad. So her saying it was alright really meant it was in fact yummy.
I also asked Xiao Huaisu afterwards, "How about you?"
"You're sick, I'll take care of these." I asked Xiao Huaisu to keep her company to give them a chance to talk. That was so sweet of me, wasn't it?
He sat up, planning to help me clear the dishes, giving his answer while we were picking them up: "Well, it looked appetising and tasted surprisingly good." Muttering to himself, he then remembered: "In the past, didn't you once burn down the kitchen trying to boil noodles?"
Xiao Huaisu's gaze fell, a warm smile gracing his face as he turned to Li You, caressing her head as he said: "Thank you. The flower, I like it very much. But today's a weekday, so don't you need to be at school?"
When her words struck me, my eyes brimmed with tears as I looked at my little princess. Bending my head, I placed a kiss on her forehead, then saying to her very affectionately in return: "Goodnight."
"I think so too."
Did he not go to school because he was ill? I immediately helped Xiao Huaisu back into his apartment. He looked at me, but didn't push me away, saying: "It's only a fever. I'm still not in a weak enough state to need someone supporting me. Anyhow, what are you doing here?"
"You're sick, I'll take care of these." I asked Xiao Huaisu to keep her company to give them a chance to talk. That was so sweet of me, wasn't it?
I also asked Xiao Huaisu afterwards, "How about you?"
Xiao Huaisu still helped me carry the bowls, following beside me, he asked: "It's just a fever, and it's even gone down now. Do I look that weak to you?"
Li You turned her gaze to my stomach, so I pulled up my shirt, showing her the scar on my tummy: "I got this giving birth to you."

留守老人: It's a term for older parents who's grown children flew the coop. It's very common in farming villages.[]iana: This is one of my favourite chapters, btw.
"I was planning to order some take-out right around the time you two arrived."
Xiao Huaisu stared me down for a bit, then placed the bowls in my hands saying: "As you wish."
"I heard he didn't have a class today, so he should be here. I even messaged him to ask if he'd be home and he said yes." Muttering to the door, I then added: "He couldn't have gone out in such a short span of time." How could I be so unlucky.
Wearing a guilty expression, I defended: "I'll make up for the missing class, don't worry."
She then added: "But if you're my dad, and he's my dad, then who's my mom? Did my mom have two husbands? Can I have two husbands in the future too? Can girls actually marry two husbands after they grow up?"
Covering Li You with her blanket, thought about how since Xiao Huaisu was still single, taking Li You to go see him shouldn't be a problem.
It may be true my daughter has a bit of a poisonous tongue at times, but when she needs to be warm, she's very warm, isn't she? After ignoring my kiss, she wiped her face in disgust. Everything was pure perfection.
In the living room, as soon as I placed the dishes and chopsticks in the sink, I heard Li You say to Xiao Huaisu: "You left dad all alone in the kitchen? Don't you think he looks very lonely?"
Seeing the fever patch attached to his head, Li You instead asked: "Are you sick?"
This scene really made me feel as though Xiao Huaisu liked kids.
"Oh, is that so. Don't you think dad looks like an elder left behind?"

"It's very pretty. Is it a lewisia?"

Xiao Huaisu stared me down for a bit, then placed the bowls in my hands saying: "As you wish."
"I think so too."

"Haha—" Xiao Huaisu's serene laugh, from afar and near, was incomparably unbridled.
I then gave the other cup to Li You: "You drink more water too. The weather is really dry these days but you never drink any water. You'll end up sick like your Uncle Xiao if you don't."

While washing the dishes in the kitchen, my face turned blank. Is it really that good for me to be so considerate, so sensible as well as so selfless?
Witnessing that big one and little one obediently drinking their water before my eyes made a difficult to describe feeling of pride lingered in my chest. Grateful, I nodded at them both.
